CROSSROAD FARM
Quality Local Produce

Post Mills, Vermont
Crossroad Farm's History...

Crossroad Farm is a diversified vegetable farm and bedding plant and
flower nursery, where Tim & Janet grow over 100 varieties of
vegetables on 40 acres in the peaceful mountain valley of Post Mills,
Vermont. Our 14 greenhouses produce over 200 varieties of flowers
including living, hanging works of art by Janet. We grow around
20,000 pounds of greenhouse tomatoes annually.

Since we started farming in 1980 we have been seeking methods of
growing vegetables that satisfy our personal philosophies -- reasons
for starting farming in the first place: We grow fresh vegetables that
not only taste fantastic but are also healthy and nutritious. We provide
a reasonable living for our workers and ourselves. Most importantly,
we produce our crops by methods that will make the soil stronger and
viable for generations to come. Perhaps because we are iconoclasts,
we have never been able to adhere to one particular dogma such as
organic farming. Just because something utilized in farming is organic,
does not make it  safer or healthier, per say, for the consumer,
laborer, farmer, or to the ecology of the farm.
About Us:

We take pride in producing a
consistent supply of delicious,
quality fresh vegetables while
practicing
sustainable agriculture
to maintain the land for future
generations.

Each spring our greenhouses are
full of top quality hanging
baskets, annuals, herbs
and vegetable plants. You will
find vegetables of exceptional
variety and flavor at the
stand from June through
September. Careful planning
means we can sell only what
we grow.

We invite you to come visit our
colorful spring greenhouses or
the flourishing rows of
vegetables any time from the end
of April to the end of September.
And, if there is snow in the
winter, feel free to come
cross-country skiing on the tracks
Tim has set.

Without realizing it, we were
practicing something called
“sustainable” farming.
According to Vern Grubinger,
author of
Sustainable Vegetable
Production From Start-Up to
Market
, “...adherents of
sustainable agriculture judge
farm practices not only by their
effect on short-term yield and
profit, but also by their impact
on water quality, soil
productivity, human health, and
the local community.”  As Vern
aptly points out, “sustainable
agriculture is a continuum with
the unattainable goal of total
sustainability at one end. …
The important part is the pursuit
itself, not perfect agreement
among those involved.”
Our pursuit includes the extensive use of crop rotations, soil improvement by applying
compost and animal manures, growing cover crops, and turning under crop residues. We
use cultural practices and beneficial insects to control pests.  Before using any sprays we
scout our fields and then, should we need to spray, we select the least-toxic pesticide. We
control our weeds using various cultivation tools and no herbicides. Diseases are controlled
by disease-resistant varieties or cultural practices and hardly ever with fungicides. The
fruits of our labors are sold directly to our customers at our farm stand, at the Norwich
Farmers Market, to restaurant chefs, local stores, or children’s summer camps.

We hope to have created a viable enterprise that will live on for many generations and
make future farmers as gratified as we have been and future customers as satisfied as ours
are, presently.
